A Student Success room is an alternative learning space for all students to use when needed. Every high school in the Waterloo Region District School Board has one. At WCI our Student Success room is located directly across from the main office and beside Guidance.

Our Students
Students are scheduled into Student Success for the following reasons:
- Credit Recovery – Students who failed courses last year (or last semester) will complete any missing work or re-do any unsuccessful work in order to recover the credit.
- ILC – Independent Learning Courses are new credits that students work towards at their own pace. Some of these courses are in binders and others are on-line.
- Credit Rescue– Students who are struggling in multiple courses can be scheduled into Student Success for extra support. This gives them extra time to complete assignments or other outstanding work and gives them time to review course material to prepare for upcoming tests or exams, while under the supervision of a Student Success teacher.
Students can still use Student Success, even if they are not scheduled in. The room is open through lunch, students can work in our room during their spare or sometimes teachers will send individual students to work in Student Success when the class is doing independent seat work. Aside from lunchtime, when socializing is allowed, our room is a place to get work done. The number of students using our room varies from day to day and block to block - we can have anywhere from 1 to 25 students working in our room, each doing different types of work.
How can I get my child scheduled into the Student Success room?
Talk to your child's guidance counsellor if you would like to explore this option.
What the heck is Credit Recovery??
When a student fails a course they usually need to repeat the entire course in order to earn the credit. Credit recovery is another way to earn a failed credit that is only offered to select students. In a recovery the student only completes work that was incomplete or unsuccessful the first time around. This option is only offered to students who were successful with the majority of their course material but had a few gaps that caused them to fail. An example would be a student who completed all of their course work but did not complete their final summative project. In a credit recovery the student would just complete the summative project and would then be granted the credit.
Credit recoveries are usually quick and will be completed within 4 to 6 weeks. After that students remain scheduled in Student Success to complete an independent course. We offer a wide range of elective courses that students can choose from. These courses are self-directed but there is always a teacher in the room to keep students on track and to provide help if needed. This option allows students to earn 2 credits in one period which prevents them from falling behind in their credit count.
